I learned a lot about myself and how I deal with life (and emotions) through being off of sugar and flour for over two months now. For those curious about what I’ve been eating, I do not stay away from rice or corn but focus on brown rice. The meals in the reel: 1) my go to amazing salad! Chopped chicken breast with colorful cabbage, avocado, cucumber, cilantro, grape tomatoes, seasoned with olive oil, everything but the bagel TJ’s seasoning, balsamic vinegar 2) brown rice fried rice with zucchini, spinach, peas and some eggs, seasoned with tamari (left out the sugary oyster oil) 3) yummy açaí bowl made with unsweetened frozen acai, a half a frozen banana, some peanut butter (just peanut butter, no added ingredients) with a splash of unsweetened oat milk topped with unsweetened coconut flakes, chopped apple and chia seeds 4) made a refreshing juice with watermelon, mint and some fresh lime juice! #resilient #courage #breakingupwithsugarandflour

Next week will be 66 days, which was my goal beginning this challenge. I’ve definitely had my moments where I’ve wanted to just go back to how I used to eat, especially when I was PMSing. Here is what has helped: 1) Eating foods that taste good. 2) Going with the flow when needed, instead of judging myself and fixating on being “good” or “bad.” For example: went to a yummy Easter brunch at my sister’s. She told me the salad dressing I ate had honey, and it was no big deal. 3) Focusing on how amazing I feel in body and mind has been a game changer for me. In the past I definitely got caught up in losing weight or fighting into a certain piece of clothing. There is no need for “willpower” (in the first week for sure there is!) when you are fully aware of how your body feels when you are optimally nourishing it. 4) Keep it simple, keep it positive. Shaming and self-flagellating are not the way I’ve made lasting changes in the past, so those are not part of my process now. During this time I’ve attended three birthday parties, and two other events with food and treats as the focus. In all instances I had a wonderful time while continuing to be off of sugar and flour. Never thought I could find joy beyond food but now I have! #breakingupwithsugar #resilient #courage

My latest blood work by my naturopath came back with amazing results. For the first time since I’ve been working with her these past 8 months, there is absolutely no inflammation in my body. She was smiling widely as I shared with her how amazing I feel and how this way of eating had opened up a freedom and peace in me I’ve been searching for, for a long time. I’m about three weeks away from my 66 day mark and I intend to keep this going! #courage #resilience #snowgroove #breakingupwithsugar

36 days on this no sugar/flour path! I feel amazing! A few of you have asked me to share some of my meals. I made a reel and would like to add a few notes:
⚡️Everything I eat must taste good to me. I’m not just about “food is fuel.”
⚡️As I’ve stepped away the refined junk, I crave foods that are nourishing.
⚡️My hunger and appetite has stabilized and food is no longer top of mind for me at all times. FREEDOM!
⚡️I no longer crave sugar. It took about 3 days but since I’m not eating white flour or anything else that acts like sugar in my body, there is no desire. The emotions and the social aspect of it is there (went to a birthday party yesterday with a lovely and delicious-looking cake) but these are all moments where so far I’m able to choose nourishment over immediate gratification.
⚡️I was able to travel home to visit my parents (usually where I numb to deal with being home) and continued to choose nourishing and kind foods.

This is not about willpower or discipline, it’s simply about making this change every single day! I am here for you if you would like support. Send a message in my DM and I’ll cheer you on! Another tasty and nourishing recipe from @monica.paz.nourished. I’ve always been a fan of green smoothies and green juice, so I knew I needed to try her recipe for #greensoup. Today has been an emotionally hard day for me. Normally I would manage these feelings by going to the drugstore and diving head first into some Pringle’s, a variety of chocolate, and some Hostess cakes. I was making up for lost time since chocolate gave me hormone-induced migraines for most of my life and since my hormones shifted immensely as a result of having two babies, I am able to eat chocolate without any migraines! But the sweet stuff still made me feel really bad (fatigue, bad moods, etc.) in the last year that I’ve super over consumed it. Love all the recipes I’ve tried by @monica.paz.nourished this salmon one sheet bake was superb and so easy to make!! #courage #resilience #breakingupwithsugar

I made this amazing cilantro/chickpea/avocado/quinoa salad by @monica.paz.nourished. In my recent past when I was eating a ton of processed and even fast food (no shame, it’s all around us and cheap!) my tastebuds would never enjoy a food like this. It blows my mind how nourishing and kind foods are becoming more and more delicious to me, a self proclaimed French fry and queso loving gal. It’s true that you can retrain your tastebuds and for me, being on this new journey where I’m still a foodie and learning to love the taste of all these foods while processing the emotions and grief that come with letting go of something that has been a crutch for so long, has been transformative. #breakingupwithsugar #resilience #courage

#Day16 no sugar/no flour. Had a lot of feelings over the weekend because I no longer have anything to stuff the emotions down. This is definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done (even harder than unmedicated childbirth) because I’m taking on years and years of using food to cope. The other times I’ve given up sugar, the cravings never went away because I was still consuming white flour and processed food that is engineered to make you want more and more! 🤯In terms of what I’m eating I am approaching this using an old adage from a former gym coach: keep it simple, keep it positive. 1) I eat foods I enjoy. For example I tried these keto Parmesan tortilla wraps and I wasn’t a fan so no longer eating those. 2) I aim for one ingredient or two ingredient foods 3) I really pay attention to how a food makes me feel. #resilient #courage #noflournosugar

I’m on #day10 of no sugar/flour and I feel better and better every day. The biggest change I’ve felt is my mood. My parents and sister visited last week and my normal low-grade irritation was gone! Anyone do a 60 day of no contact with a toxic someone you need to let go of (romantically)? 🙋🏾‍♀️ I’ve done several of those challenges though it’s been a long time (in an amazing relationship with someone now). I bring this up because cutting this relationship with sugar and flour feels the EXACT SAME WAY! The going out of my skin feeling and all the feels that come with removing something from my life that has always been there as a mechanism for me to cope with life and all it’s discomforts. Anyways! I’m on day 3 of a new life without sugar and it’s twin, flour. How did I get to this place and decision? I’ve been an addict, eating sweets and treats late at night and binging to the point where I feel headachy and brain fog. This has been going on the last few months as I’ve used sugar to deal with life. And I don’t like how I’ve been feeling. Marriage is hard. It’s even hard when you are married to the person you’ve been waiting your whole life for. In my case, I didn’t meet my husband until I was 37. This week tested us with old wounds and trauma. And we are still working to get on the other side. As we are navigating ourselves through this latest bit of chaos, I’m thankful to be with someone who will work with me through the hard times. Here are two pics of us when we got married. In this pandemic age where I’m a full time mama and I work full time from home in my 9-5 comms gig, we have used screens as a means to keep our kids entertained. And a lot of times our TV is on for hours at a time. After a big meltdown by our 3-year-old when he refused to go to school, I decided to limit screens as much as possible. “One day I will have my sons and he won’t matter.” Before I met hubby, I went through a lot of heartbreak. This emotional journal entry is from March 2013. It doesn’t matter who it’s about because it’s true - this person no longer matters. In affairs of the heart, I was a wallower: I journaled and cried a lot and went through the fire of pain to get to the other side. I truly believe it’s why I am with who I am now, someone who showers me with a love an adoration I never experienced before. What I once believed was impossible is now the life I live.
